So this was an interesting project. I'm normally all about kind of flowier, prettier things, but for this class I've made it my goal to work more heavily with simpler vectored objects, experimenting with the overall forms rather than the details. As a result, my 4square project contrasts the black&white detail drawings with the bolder, simpler shapes of the individual flowers.

I have learned so many new tools during the course of this thing it is pretty much ridiculously awesome. Illustrator does a lot of cool things.

Shape construction

Lesson progress: first half of the homesale assignment. Nothing particularly interesting to see here. This is a literally just one of the default lessons. I'm getting to know all those cryptic tools in the toolbar. XD

Typonarcissism

MONOGRAM CONCEPTS

I've always found the idea of designing my own monogram somewhat narcissistic. Enjoyed it anyways! It took forever for me to get off the ground because I got super OCD about it and felt like everything I did was crud. I tend to overwhelm myself with my own mediocrity. Once I got over that, though, I just wanted to keep going.

These kind of run the gamut from depressingly architectural to pointlessly removed from actual lettering. I hope something in the mix looks good!

Monogrammed

So the assignment was to take the logo we picked last time (Tolkien's monogram, in my case) and make a sort of square wallpaper design out of it. Pretty simple and straightforward. I still have a lot to learn. XD

When I think of monograms, logos, and the like, J.R.R. Tolkien's monogram is always the first thing that comes to mind. Not only was he an accomplished writer, but Tolkien had an amazing artistic sensibility that showed in his maps, his calligraphic work, his elvish and dwarven lettering, and even in this simple identifier. I consider his work one of the primary standards for my own future designs.
